چکیده

We present a novel architecture for an optical network, TRANslucent Smart Pixel ARray (TRANSPAR), having smart pixel devices which effectively function in an optically translucent manner. The network protocol is similar to carriersense multiple-access/collision-detection (CSMA/CD) commonly used in Ethernet, but adapted to a ring configuration using optical parallel packets in free space. The TRANSPAR devices also function as a fine-grain mesh-connected parallel pipeline array for image and video signal processing. We designed, fabricated, and are currently testing the TRANSPAR smart pixel devices and network node hardware. This paper presents the network architecture, tradeoffs, and design decisions, the testing results to date, and ends with considerations on practicality and future scalability.

We present an optoelectronic-VLSI system that integrates complementary metal-oxide semiconductory multiple-quantum-well smart pixels for high-throughput computation and signal processing. The system uses 5 3 10 cellular smart-pixel arrays with intrachip electrical mesh interconnections and interchip optical point-to-point interconnections. Each smart pixel is a fine grain microprocessor that ex...

General-purpose 128 128 SIMD processor array with integrated image sensor

Introduction: In some computer vision applications, especially where high computational performance is required together with low power consumption, it is beneficial to use ‘vision chips’—devices that combine image sensing and processing on a single silicon die. Application-specific vision chips can efficiently perform some uncomplicated low-level image processing tasks, such as filtering, edge...

Real-Time Image Processing on a Focal Plane SIMD Array

Real-time image processing applications have tremendous computational workloads and I/O throughput requirements. Operation in mobile, portable devices poses stringent resource limitations (size, weight, and power). The SIMD Pixel Processor (SIMPil) has been designed at Georgia Tech to address these problems. In SIMPil, an image sensor array (focal plane) is integrated on top of a SIMD computing...

An analogue SIMD focal-plane processor array

A new smart-sensor VLSI circuit intended for focal-plane processing of grey-scale images is presented. The architecture is based on a fine-grain software-programmable SIMD array. Processing elements, integrated within each pixel of the imager, are implemented utilising a switched-current analogue microprocessor concept. In a 0.6μm CMOS process the cell size is equal to 98.6μm×98.6μm. A prototyp...

SmartCam: Devices for Embedded Intelligent Cameras

The advent and subsequent popularity of low cost, low power CMOS vision sensors enables us to integrate processing logic on the camera chip itself, thereby creating so-called smart sensors. They have an on-chip SIMD data processing array controlled by an off-chip controller. Smart sensors can execute low-level image processing routines as soon as one or more image lines are converted; they do n...
